The good news is, if you follow the best cybersecurity practices, you can reduce your risk of falling victim to this growing threat. For example, your personal devices should all have robust antivirus and anti-malware software with advanced detection and protections. You should use long, unique passwords for each account and manage them with a strong password manager. You should update your phone’s operating system and apps regularly. And you should always report and block suspicious SMS numbers.

On the business side, ensure your staff follows basic SMS URL inspection practices and is trained to verify any service confirmation links they receive in messages from ride-sharing, food delivery services or other vendors. This includes confirming that any such links in your company’s SMS campaigns are branded with your organization’s verified name. This will build trust and credibility with your recipients and make them less likely to click malicious links.
